Child benefit (Kindergeld) is a payment made by the state to parents or guardians, calculated according to the number and age of the children.
The payment of child benefit is fundamentally the responsibility of the family benefits department (Familienkasse) within the Employment Agency Bonn/Rhein-Sieg (Agentur für Arbeit Bonn/Rhein-Sieg), Villemombler Straße 101, 53123 Bonn (Lengsdorf). More information is available from 01801 546337, Monday to Friday 8 am to 6 pm, or at www.arbeitsagentur.de.
Parental benefit (Elterngeld): Under German legislation, following the birth of a child, parents (including fathers) may be exempted from work for a specific period of time in order to care for this child. During this period they are eligible for parental benefit (Elterngeld) amounting to between EUR 300 and EUR 1,800 per month (depending on their income).
Detailed information on parental benefit and leave as well as specific details of the responsible authorities within the Children, Youth, and Family Office (Amt für Kinder, Jugend und Familie) can be found in German here.
