Biodiversity - a bottom-up, top-down and sideways perspective: factors impacting small farmer food security

Content: The components of biodiversity that impact small farmer food production differ from most biological concepts of biodiversity. Small farmers are concerned with producing food for family consumption and for the marketplace and seldom think about improving agro-biodiversity. Farm production is usually restricted to a limited number of food crops. These plants are constantly confronted above and below ground with - The good, the bad and the ugly. Food production is constantly limited by organisms that impair plant health with losses exceeding 50 percent common. In this talk the bad or detrimental as well as the good or beneficial organisms that are all part of agricultural biodiversity and that interact with plant health will be presented. We will look at these interrelationships from the top to the bottom of the living plant and after harvest. The sideways perspective refers to farmer biodiversity and the social-economic components that negatively influence food production.
